South High School Alumni Max Kaplan, a 20-year-old Ivy League student, has earned a gold Congressional Award medal. In the entire nation, there were only 236 awarded this year.The honor is the highest Congress can award to youths aged 14 to 23. The event was held during Kaplan’s Christmas break from Princeton University because he was unable to attend a ceremony in June in the nation’s capital.
Here are some of the events happening in the South Bay from Oct. 25 through Oct. 31:
• The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum will get into the season with a fun-filled day for the whole family.
Pumpkin decorating contest, open to all ages and judged by Friends of Rancho San Pedro. Pumpkins will be judged based on age group, and prizes will be awarded for most color and most creative design. Tools will be provided for the contest.

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. The event runs from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at 18127 S. Alameda St. in Rancho Dominguez.
The city of El Segundo Recreation and Parks Departmentwill host its annual Halloween Frolic from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 31 on the 300 and 400 blocks of Main Street in downtown El Segundo.

This year’s annual South Bay Business Hall of Fame luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, at the Holiday Inn Torrance which is located at 18900 South Vermont Ave.
One of the recipients will be The Original Red Onion. The Rolling Hills Estates restaurant is one of five inductees this year, according to Brendan Huffman, the South Bay Business Hall of Fame’s policy director.
“Each of these inductees has contributed significantly to the region’s economy and culture for many decades,” Huffman said.
Other inductees include Chevron, Juanita’s Foods and the Port of Los Angeles.
Torrance has been named as one of the most livable midsize cites in the United States. It came in Number 32.
The South Bay’s largest community received the rating from a survey of cities with populations of 20,000 to 350,000 conducted by the website livability.com.
Torrance received high marks for the quality of education available and amenities such as parks and climate, but surprisingly low grades for health-care facilities.
I do not understand that when we have Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Little Company of Mary Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente Medical Offices plus Kaiser Medical Center just a few blocks from the city boundaries,
Mayor Scotto said, “Rated 32nd in the United States is a pretty big deal, I think, all in all, people would say Torrance is a great place to live.”
OCT. 11 THRU NOV. 10 IN SAN PEDRO
Acrobatic performers will be featured under the 66ft. high Blue and Yellow big top, embodying the spirit of amphibians, Native American Hoop Dancers and a figure from outer space called the Crystal Man. The two and one half hour show opens Oct. 11 in San Pedro, at the Port of Los Angeles with the performances scheduled through Nov. 10th. Check it out at Berth 46, 3011 Miner Street. Tickets run from $50 up to $150.
Then show travels to the Orange County Great Park Festival Site in Irvine beginning on Nov. 21. The entire show will move to the Santa Monica Pier on Jan. 17th.
